Castle Dunnottarr (pronounced da-nay-ter) is a stunning ruin on the Northeast coast near the small town of Stonehaven, a little South of Aberdeen. As the picture shows, the castle is situated on a rock formation that forms a very defensible island. Once "inside" the castle, on top of the formation, however, there is a typically beautiful Scottish lawn surrounded by the castle buildings. I swear, a person could eat off of those Scottish lawns.
Castle Dunnottarr is famous in Scottish history for being the location where the Scottish royal heraldry were kept hidden from the English for a while. It has some modest recent history, too. The version of "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close was filmed here. With a fair amount of scenery building, though.
